About this data

Updated Sep 2026

Figures are shown as the source publishes them, and anything we calculate is explained below. How the data is made Report an error General information, not financial advice.

Which wires, and why

The feed reads five publications and no more: The Block, CoinDesk, Cointelegraph, Decrypt and The Defiant. They were chosen because each has a newsroom, an editorial standard it publishes, and a record of correcting itself. Press-release wires, aggregators and anything that runs paid placement as news are left out on purpose. A quieter feed from outlets that check things beats a busier one that does not.

Every headline links to the outlet that wrote it. The links carry a nofollow attribute and open in a new tab; nothing is rehosted or rewritten here beyond the first line of the story.

How tone is scored

Each headline and its first line are scored against a lexicon of a few hundred terms we maintain for this market. Words like exploit, drained, paused, lawsuit and outflow count against; approval, inflow, record, launch and partnership count for. Negation flips the nearby term, and a hedged word such as "may" or "could" halves it. The result is a number from −1 to +1, shown as bearish, neutral or bullish. It is a reading of the language, not of the facts: a wire can report a hack in neutral words, and a rally in breathless ones.

The tone figures in the header and the day panel aggregate those scores. "Tone, last 24h" is the average across every headline of the last day; the split is the count of bullish against bearish ones. Neither is a market signal. They tell you how the wires are talking.

How major stories are found

Headlines from different outlets are compared word by word after the common words are removed. When two or more share most of their meaningful words, they are treated as one story, and the story is ranked by how many wires carry it and how recent its newest item is. A story on one wire is still a story; it just does not lead. This is deliberately simple. It will occasionally merge two stories about the same company on the same day, and it will miss the same story told in different words.

What it cannot tell you

  • Whether a story is true. That is the outlet's job, and the reason only these outlets are read.
  • Whether the market has priced it. A headline scored bullish at 09:00 is old by 09:05 on a perpetuals venue.
  • Tone with any subtlety. Sarcasm, quotes and headlines that pose a question all defeat a lexicon.
  • Anything since the last update. The feed is as fresh as the header says it is.

Not investment advice

The feed describes what the wires are saying and how they are saying it. It is not a recommendation to do anything about it.

Questions

Why only five outlets?

Because the value of a feed is what it leaves out. These five have newsrooms, published standards and a record of corrections. Adding wires that reprint press releases would raise the count and lower the signal.

Is the sentiment score a trading signal?

No. It is a reading of the language in the headlines, produced by a lexicon, and it is wrong in the ways lexicons are wrong. It tells you how the wires are talking, which is useful context and nothing more.

How fresh is the feed?

As fresh as the time shown in the header. Each update pulls the latest items from every wire.

Do the links help the outlets' search rankings?

They are marked nofollow, so no. They are there so you read the story where it was reported.
